6 Steps to minimalist expression

Jeanie Fay-Snow > Inspiration > 6 Steps to minimalist expression

Minimalism in communication is an art form. Much like the use of minimalism in the visual arts, a minimalist verbal communication can evoke a powerful idea and a lasting impression. Minimalism is about the essentials ONLY. By eliminating the non-essential references, details or concepts the main idea is expressed with a purity and clarity that enables action.

1. Lead your audience to your main idea – How will you get their attention? What is compelling about your main idea? Where do you want your audience to go once you communicate the main idea? What do you want them to do and think after they hear your full message? Less is more.

Step 2. Keep your message simple – Employ a laser focus to your main idea. Zoom in on your subject and crop out any distractions (non essential details, supporting points) to create a surrounding space that accentuates your idea’s prominence. What is the most powerful but basic expression to support your point? Use accessible language.

Step 3. Create impact by enhancing your composition – In the “rule of thirds” photographers use a conceptual 9-box grid that highlights the essential photographic element, grabbing the eye. Apply the “rule of thirds” as you frame your message. Where does your main idea fit, how will you pace toward it to capture the listeners’ attention?

Step 4. Add a touch of “color” to infuse emotion and create a memory – Color in minimalist photography intensifies the visual impact; it provides real and emotional context. Color in a simple verbal message is the emotional flavor or reference that provokes a reaction and helps to embed a more lasting memory.

Step 5. Use context to add texture and dimension to your communication – Minimalist images often use texture to simplify a complex idea. Adding the right context to your message reinforces your main point by evoking related ideas and thereby fostering the development of internal images in the minds eye of your listener.

Step 6. Create momentum – leave your audience with a lasting dramatic impression to encourage their memory and sustainable engagement with your message.
